Avid Microchip Identification System

AVID can bring your pet home.Through the use of micro-electronic technology developed by American Veterinary Identification Devices (AVID), we can now permanently identify your pet with an individualized, non-alterable code number. This system has two components. A tiny rice grain sized device that is placed just under the skin, and a small hand held scanner that easily and quickly reads these individual code numbers.

How does it work? The device, or chip, is a passive system. There is no power supply involved. It is encapsulated within a proven biocompatible glass shell. These chips are placed in a standard site for future reading. The scanner generates a low energy radio signal that energizes the chip to transmit its unique number.

How much does it cost? The procedure is very similar to any injection, and does not require any sedation or special care. It is often done during a routine examination, though some clients request it during the spay/neuter procedure. Our receptionist can give you an exact fee for the microchip placement.

Who will scan my pet? Sacramentans are very fortunate that both the City and County Animal Control Agencies and the Sacramento SPCA have agreed to scan all pets entering their facilities. Yolo, Solano, El Dorado, and most other neighboring counties are also scanning for microchips. And, of course, most veterinary hospitals are presently scanning for the AVID Microchip. This gives Sacramento a tremendous retrieval system.

What will these agencies do if they find my pet and determine the AVID code? They simply call the 800-phone number. An AVID representative will check the computer files for the individualized nine digit code. If the owner has joined PetTrac, their personal information will be listed, and they will be called directly. If the owner didn’t choose to join PetTrac, the information will be traced to the veterinarian, who will be contacted. The veterinarian will keep all pertinent information on each chipped animal and its owner. That’s another reason it is very important to inform your veterinarian as soon as possible with any changes in the address or phone numbers. The California Veterinary Medical Association is keeping a separate data bank on computer as a backup system.

What is PetTrac?PetTrac is a voluntary retrieval system set up by AVID. There is a one time nominal fee to list as many pets as you wish. This information will identify the chipped animal with you personally. If you choose not to join PetTrac, your chipped animal will still be identified through the veterinarian that performed the chipping procedure.

Why chip my pet? Tags and collars, unfortunately, fall off, gates get left open, tattoos can become unreadable and are difficult to trace, and some pets are even stolen. Collars and tags still represent an important safeguard for pets and these should be worn at all times, however AVID permanently identifies your pet. AVID microchips have been found to be nearly indestructible when placed between the shoulder blades. Animal bites and encounters with cars have not destroyed them in the past. Even the unfortunate animal that is found deceased can be identified, so the owner can know the final outcome to their pet.
